Maungatautari Mountain Ecological Island
Maungatautari Mountain has been developed into New Zealand’s
largest inland “Island” reserve. An area
covering 3,400 hectares has been fenced to keep out
all predators so the natural bird and insect life will
be protected. The North Island Brown Kiwi is thriving
once again along with other endangered species. The
entrance to the northern test enclosure is only a ten
minute drive from the Lodge. A 20 minute drive will
take you to the southern test enclosure where there
is a wetland area, an award winning walking frame high
in the tree tops and an acclimatisation aviary for bird
species reentering the habitat. This attraction is currently
free of charge.
Scenic Walks
There are a variety of scenic walkways in the Cambridge
region, ranging from 15 to 90 minutes. The more energetic
may like to tackle the summit of Maungatautari Mountain!
Karapiro Dam
The Karapiro Hydro Museum is open two days a week. There
are nine hydro dams on the Waikato River and their fascinating
history is recorded in the Museum.
Thoroughbred Stud Tours
We can arrange personally conducted tours of five renowned
horse studs. The Cambridge area is known as the ‘Kentucky
of New Zealand’ and these tours are highly recommended.
Antique Shops & Art Galleries
Cambridge and nearby Tirau are renowned for their antique
shops and many excellent art galleries. The Cambridge
Country Store is a local icon - situated in a magnificent
hundred year old church, it offers a huge range of exciting
and varied crafts, jewellery, New Zealand wines, gourmet
food and more.

There are several well respected local wineries within
the Waikato vicinity and tours can be arranged upon
request.
